Viagra comes as a tablet containing sildenafil citrate, to take by mouth. For most men, the recommended dose is 50 mg. taken, as needed, approximately 1 hour before sexual activity. However, sildenafil citrate may be taken anywhere from 4 hours to 0.5 hour before sexual activity. Based on effectiveness and toleration, the dose may be increased to a maximum recommended dose of 100 mg or decreased to 25 mg. The maximum recommended dosing frequency is once per day.

In the US, there are no federal legal standards for prescribing Viagra [see Warnings and Precautions (5.1) ]. Prescribing of Viagra by itself is also not recommended, but should be considered in appropriate cases [see Warnings and Precautions (5.2)].

In the US: Viagra [Lapine] should be limited to treatment of erectile dysfunction [see Dosage and Administration (2.3)]. It is contraindicated in the treatment of hypertension or alcoholic hepatitis.
Viagra [Lapine] should be used at the lowest effective dose available for erectile dysfunction. Do not exceed a maximum daily dose of Viagra [Lapine] 3,000 mg or longer. [See Warnings and Precautions (5.4)] The drug is not appropriate for use in patients with an increased liver risk [see Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Reports (5.5) ]. To use Viagra [Lapine], concomitantly prescribe a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI: sertraline, or fluoxetine).
Viagra [Lapine] is contraindicated in the treatment of diabetes mellitus or with any of the following known interactions: monoamine oxidase inhibitors, antidepressants, antihistamines, anticonvulsants, antipsychotics, barbiturates, and phenothiazines.
In France use of Viagra [Lapine] is restricted to treatment of moderate sexual dysfunction with a serum testosterone < 20 ng/dl. In England and Wales it is an add-on therapy for treatment of low sexual desire with an increase in serum testosterone < 30 ng/dl.
